Active Buddies is a pilot initiative in the Oswestry area only. Shropshire RCC is looking for Active Buddy volunteers to accompany older people to be more active. Research has shown that physical activity is vitally important for the physical and mental health of people of all ages. Many older people feel isolated in their own homes. They would like to be more active but the idea of facing a lot of new people in a new environment, such as an exercise class, is very daunting. An Active Buddy could give them the support and confidence they need to take that first step to socialising, feeling fitter and having fun.
Each Active Buddy volunteer will take part in appropriate training and a DBS check. They will then be matched to an older person in the Oswestry area, who would like to be more active. The volunteer will accompany the person to their chosen local activity e.g. a gentle exercise class, a Walk for Health, a gym session or a local sports club. After a few weeks, the older person will have developed friendships at the activity and will be able to continue on their own. The Buddy will then be matched to a new client. Buddies must be at least 18 years old.
This is an unusual volunteering opportunity but should be very rewarding and fun. Volunteers will be asked to give up to two hours per week, probably during the day. Volunteers will work with each person for up to 6 weeks.
