Musketeers & Maidens Group
When the Grange Day Centre in Shrewsbury closed in August 2011, support was needed for a group of adults with physical disabilities to enable them to continue meeting and socialising. Shropshire Council enlisted the help of the Shropshire RCC’s Wise & Well team and after a lot of determination and hard work, a group of former Grange regulars now meet weekly in new surroundings.
Shropshire RCC staff supported the group to pool part of their personal budgets to have a venue and the opportunity to do activities together. They chose a name: “Musketeers and Maidens” with the motto ‘All For One’, and member of the group meet twice a week at Mereside Community Centre in Shrewsbury on Wednesdays from 10.30-3.30 and the Lantern Centre on Fridays from 12.30-3.30. The group enjoys many activities together including Exercise classes, pottery, art; BOCCIA matches, quizzes, games and numerous cups of tea, chatting and lots of laughter
Team Manager Daphne Simmons explained.
"My role has been to help facilitate and co-ordinate these meetings, whilst they adapt to being their own group in new surroundings.
"The group particularly enjoys playing BOCCIA and has played matches with Lindale Court sheltered housing complex ,the team from Ford Village Hall and proudly selected teams to take part in the annual tournament. Unfortunately they didn’t win this time but group member Eddie Davies said “Watch out we are getting in some serious practice ready for the next tournament."
Some of the comments from members about why they like coming to the group:
We all have a disability but we can forget about it.
I like meeting new people.
Testing our wits with the quizzes.
Being involved in the Boccia league.
Nobody judges you and everyone is equal.
